Dwayne Johnson maintained a highly successful wrestling career in the WWE under the moniker The Rock. Since his debut in 1996, he has become very popular with WWE fans, faced against some of the biggest names in the business, and has garnered enormous respect through his achievements in the ring.

During the process of debuting into the wrestling world, he had a lot of helping hands that guided him, including the first intercontinental champion of WWE Pat Patterson. When Johnson won his first match, instead of congratulating him, Patterson made some condescending remarks about his fighting style and his punches.

Pat Patterson Criticized The Rock’s Punches
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnsonwas planning for his WWE debut in 1996. He had his first match with The Brooklyn Brawler at a live event. He had a lot of pressure and responsibility to deliver in his first match. He talked about his experience in his debut match on theJoe Rogan Experience.
He also talked about an interesting anecdote on his first match which involved Pat Patterson. Johnson explained how after he won his match against The Brooklyn Brawler, Patterson called him and criticized his punches and the way he held himself in the ring. He said,

I had my first match. I wrestled The Brooklyn Brawler who is famous in the world of wrestling and I get backstage and everyone’s like ‘Great Job. keep working. I see Vince McMahon, he says, ‘You did a good job but be prepared, I’m gonna give you a little bit more tomorrow’. and I went ‘Great ok’.
I see Pat Patterson smoking a cigarette, ‘Come here for a second’ and he goes, ‘You punches, they f**king suck’. He said ‘If you have a shred of opportunity to make it in this business you’re gonna have to learn a lot of shit but learn how to throw a great punch.

Johnson took up the advice given by Patterson and improved himself. He slowly became one of the most revered figures in WWE and one of the few wrestlers that can draw a huge crowd. He also recently returned to WWE this September, defeating Austin Theory.

Dwayne Johnson Felt Incredible Returning to WWE
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson recently made a surprise return to WWE this September. It was his first appearance in the ring since 2019. He defeated Austin Theory and the fans cheered and heaped praise on Johnson. Facing such a huge crowd after a long time and hearing them chant his name was something Johnson incredibly enjoyed.
Johnson talked about his experience onThe Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallonabout how humbled he is by the incredible love and appreciation that the audiences have been showering on him for years. He also expressed how incredible it felt to hear a huge crowd chanting his name after a hiatus from the ring. He said,
“I went out there and it was really an incredible thing. And I’ve been really lucky over the years to entertain in a lot of different ways but that kind of connection with the WWE [fans]. By the way, that kind of connection is just like this tonight with a live audience. There’s nothing like it.
So my music hit. If you smell… I went out there. They had no idea. And you guys know how hard it is to keep a secret. You don’t. It doesn’t exist. This was a full-on secret. The people went nuts. 13,000 people sounding like 130,000 people, and it was just incredible. So WWE audience, it’s my family, and I love them. And it was incredible.”
On the work front, Johnson will star in The Christmas-themed action adventure filmRed Oneopposite Chris Evans, which is expected to release sometime in 2023. He also recently announced that he will star in a live-action adaptation of Disney’sMoana.
