She was accused of stealing $5560 worth of items from Saks Fifth Avenue department store. By that time, Ryder was already a renowned celebrity in Hollywood, and this incident garnered a lot of attention in the media.

The actress tried to clarify the incident by stating that she was researching her upcoming project where she was playing the role of a kleptomaniac. However, all her claims were in vain as she was found guilty of ‘grand theft and vandalism.’ According toThe Things,
“She was then sentenced to three years of probation plus 480 hours of community service. She also had to pay $3,700 in fines and $6,355 in restitution to the store and had to attend counseling.”
If this wasn’t enough, the actress once again became the topic of sensation when it was reported that she became a part of all these fiascos because was under the influence of drugs. Due to the then-prevailing controversies, the actress consecutively lost some major projects. Exhausted by all this, she decided to take a break from her career.

Winona Ryder claimed that her scandal proved to be a blessing in disguise
While controversies swirled aroundWinona Ryder‘s personal and professional life, the actress finally addressed the issue during an interview with Porter magazine (viaHuff Post), in 2016, Ryder revealed what had happened previously, saying,
“Psychologically, I must have been at a place where I just wanted to stop.I won’t get into what happened, but it wasn’t what people think. And it wasn’t like the crime of the century! But it allowed me time that I really needed, where I went back to San Francisco and got back into things that … I just had other interests, frankly.”
The incident indeed nearly ruined her career, but now since those things are in the past, the actress believes that the scandal was a blessing in disguise for her, because of that she took a break from her career, which gave her ample time to explore herself. Ryder’s career is once again back on track as the actress recently made an appearance in the popular Netflix series,Stranger Things.
