There’s no denying the impact ofPulp Fictionon American cinema. The movie transformed an extensive knowledge of pop culture into a symbol of coolness. But Samuel L Jackson’s mother had an issue with the film, which many believe is the film’s USP.

Years after the film’s release, several attempts have been made to copy its winning formula, resulting in several imitative films featuring similar elements, including non-linear narratives, interconnected plotlines, and references to pop culture. However, none of these efforts could capture the essence of Quentin Tarantino’s work.

Samuel L Jackson’s Mother Wasn’t a Fan Of The Non-linear Timeline
In 1994, the non-linear storytelling technique was used inPulp Fiction, which was nothing short of exceptional. Editor Sally Menke’s Oscar-nominated work was very crucial to the film’s success. Pulp Fiction starts with a prologue that introduces two unrelated characters whose significance is only revealed during the climax of the film.
Quentin Tarantinodidn’t particularly invent non-linear storytelling; however, he managed to change it from an intellectual exercise into an entertainment source. This move influenced several filmmakers, including Christopher Nolan inMemento, Paul Thomas Anderson inMagnolia, and even Tarantino himself in his following projects.

However, not everyone likes the concept of non-linear storytelling. In the bonus documentary of aPulp FictionDVD release,Samuel L. Jacksonrecalled (viaLooper),
“Not the Usual Mindless Boring Getting to Know You Chit Chat. I remember my mom saying, ‘Why didn’t they put the movie together right? … It was jumping all over the place, back and forth, you’re dead, you’re alive, you’re back, you’re here!’ I said, ‘Ma, that’s just how the movie works … Everybody can’t watch it, apparently you can’t.'”

Just like Samuel L Jackson’s mother, there would be many people who thought the non-linear storyline of the film made it confusing, but definitely not true cinema lovers.

Why Did Quentin Tarantino Cancel Pulp Fiction Prequel
It turns out there was a possibility of seeing two characters from different Tarantino movies sharing the screen. Quentin Tarantino previously revealed that he had planned a movie starring John Travolta and Michael Madsen as the Vega brothers. Unfortunately, this project never made it to the production stage.
In a conversation withCinemaBlend, Tarantino gave valuable insights into his unmade Vega Brothers film, supposedly named Double V Vega. The prequel story was set in Amsterdam and would have focused on the time when Vincent Vega was overseeing a club for Marsellus, corroborating with his reference in Pulp Fiction about the differences in the US and Europe.
Vincent’s time in Amsterdam included a brief visit from his brother Vic. However, Tarantino found it difficult to come up with a narrative beyond that point, which eventually resulted in the shelving of the project.
Double V Vega still remains a concept, as the chance for it becoming a film seems unlikely. Both Travolta and Madsen have aged, making it impractical for them to reprise their characters for the film, especially when the storyline would be a prequel.
