Although Hollywood star Tom Cruise is popular for his action roles, he has also excelled in a variety of performances, including drama and comedy. One such movie also includes the 2008 war thrillerValkyrie, in which he portrays the  German army Colonel, Claus_von_Stauffenberg, who was known to be associated with Adolf Hitler’s failed assassination. The actor reportedly did a lot of research and preparation for his role for eight months, as he was eager to work with director Bryan Singer.

However, the German authorities were not in agreement with theMission Impossiblestar playing the German army Colonel in the movie due to his ties with Scientology. The institution has been very controversial in the country and caused issues in assessing the production locations for the filming. However, things were later resolved and the filmmakers were able to continue the production. But it was still not easy for John Ottman, who shared that working on the 2008 film brought him to tears.

Directed byBryan Singerand starringTom Cruisealongside an ensemble castValkyriewas received very well at the box office. Although it faced quite a backlash initially in Germany, the critics defined the film as“maybe not the masterpiece we might have dreamed of … but not much less.”

John Ottman, who was associated with the film as an executive producer, composer, and editor, has shared that working on the movie left him weeping. During an interview with Deadline, Ottman shared that he would receive constant notes from the film’s director, writer, and Cruise.

“Tom [Cruise] would come in and see what I had done and spend a week with me, kind of checking in the editing room, and then Chris [McQuarrie] would come in and check what Tom had done.”

He shared that each of them came and asked him to put things back the way they wanted. It all came to a point where he would sit and cry, as no matter what he did, it didn’t make a difference, claiming that it all felt like a“rudderless ship going in circles.”Although he was tired of going back and forth with them, he praised Cruise, saying that he could also be a great filmmaker.

John Ottman Said Tom Cruise Could be a Great Director

During an interview, John Ottman praised Tom Cruise not only as an actor but also as a filmmaker. He shared that Cruise would be a great filmmaker as he has a good instinct for storytelling.“I told him he should be a director because he had a really good instinct for story,”Ottman said.

The director further shared that theJack Reacherstar was more concerned about the story’s arc than his performance. Ottman is not the first filmmaker to praise theVanilla Skystar’s abilities in filmmaking. Jerry Bruckheimer, who worked with Cruise in the 2022 film,Top Gun: Maverick, has also said thatThe Mummystar can do everybody’s job, as he is a great actor and producer.
