Roronoa Zoro is one of the strongest fighters among the Straw Hat Pirates inOne Piece. His incredible strength is typically used against his toughest enemies.

Swordsman Zoro

Mackenyu portrays Roronoa Zoro, a swordsman and former bounty hunter, in the recent live-action adaptation ofOne Piece.

Fans noticed that, unlike a normal samurai, he wore his sword on the opposite side, which took some getting used to. But the toughest part is watching him fighting with a sword in his mouth.

One PieceDirector Finds Mackenyu’s Zoro Fight Sequences Challenging to Shoot

In an exclusiveCBRinterview,One Piecedirector Emma Sullivan discussed how they incorporated horror elements into the episodes, brought the cast for their in-depth character exploration, and shared behind-the-scenes insights about bringing the story to life.

When asked,“You’ve got a cast of characters with unique abilities, like Usopp’s marksmanship, Zoro’s swordsmanship, and Luffy’s stretchy powers. How did you want to capture and showcase that in these action sequences?”

Sullivan said she“like to see the whole body and the actual skills that someone like Mackenyu has.”Sullivan emphasized the fact that Usopp was easier, but when it came to Zoro’s fights, those were“really big productions.”The director continued:

They’re a lot of work. There’s a lot of pre-visualization happening. There are a lot of rehearsals happening, and you want to make sure that you get that incredible heightened ability on-screen. There’s an amazing katana specialist working with us called Koji Kawamoto, and he did all the katana action. Watching him is like watching fireworks. He’s just incredible. You have to get that on camera.

One PieceDirector Likes Zoro’s Character

One Piecedirector has great admiration for Zoro’s character. She appreciated the subtle and humorous aspects of his personality.

Sullivan also praised Mackenyu for his exceptional“katana action”and his ability to capture both the action and humor. She loves all those little sides of Zoro, and said“the fact that he gets lost even though he’s a bada-s.”

She noted that they had the (solid) backstory, which adds to the character. That’s when the audience realizes“why he’s driven and why he wants to be the greatest swordsman in the world.”There’s something tragic in his background that drives him and that is the reason (according to the director) why he’s more stoic.
