The Karate Kidis a story inspired by the life of its screenwriter, Robert Mark Kamen. When Mark Kamen was 17 years old in 1964, he was attacked by a group of bullies after the New York World’s Fair. So, to defend himself, he decided to learn martial arts.
The original film began as a four-part series, with the first film —The Karate Kid,in 1984. Following its success, three sequels were made:The Karate Kid Part II(1986),The Karate Kid Part III(1989), andThe Next Karate Kid(1994).
While the film draws inspiration from Mark Kamen’s life, it tells the story of Daniel LaRusso, played by Ralph Macchio. Interestingly, the 17-year-old character had a different name inThe Karate Kidbefore, but later, the creator changed it after seeing Macchio’s face.

Ralph Machio Initially Had a Different Name inThe Karate Kid
Robert Mark Kamen toldThe Guardianthat during the casting ofThe Karte Kid(1984), the movie’s director, John G. Avildsen, called him and said that they got their kid who would play the character of Daniel.
The kid was none other than Ralph Macchio. But when the creator looked at him, he thought this“kid looked like a son of Italy.”About this, he went on to say:
“John called me up during casting and said: “I think I have our kid. You want to take a look at him?” The characters were all named after members of my family. Originally, Daniel LaRusso was Daniel Webber, after my nephew who had Jewish heritage. When Ralph showed up, I thought: “This kid looks like a son of Italy if ever there was one.” So we changed his surname.”
Initially, writers named the character Daniel Weber, but they changed it to LaRusso to accommodateRalph Macchio‘s ancestry.

Ralph Macchio’s Casting Led to Name Change inThe Karate Kid
When the character of Daniel was first created, the creators initially named him Daniel Webber. Many actors like Tom Cruise, Charlie Sheen, Robert Downey Jr., Nicolas Cage, and Keanu Reeves were considered for the role.
Actors like Sean Penn, Emilio Estevez, Anthony Edwards, C. Thomas Howell, and Eric Stoltz were also considered. When they decided that Macchio was the ideal choice, they changed the character’s last name to LaRusso to match his Italian heritage. TheDistant Thunderstar valued the role so much that he named his own son Daniel after the character he portrayed.
