When Robert Downey Jr. starred as Iron Man, Marvel wasn’t as much of a cash-making machine, in fact, it was doing as well as a bankrupt firm functioning. And Iron Man was a gamble, a one-last dice throw to hit a jackpot or lose it all forever. So, when RDJ, an actor who had been in and out of jail for his substance abuse, signed up to play what would later become one of the most iconic characters in cinematic history, the studio had very little to offer.

While Downey toiled hard to make it work, he had extreme difficulty navigating and shooting scenes with a real Iron Man suit on as Marvel had very little to spare in terms of funds.

WhenRobert Downey Jr.starred as the popular comic book superhero Iron Man, he had a great responsibility. Not only was he the last hope for a studio already in turmoil, but it was his gamble at making it big in his career after years of drug and substance abuse and jail times.

So off he went, giving it his all even if it meant that he had to do a lot of things manually, for example putting on the Iron Man suit despite getting blinded by the bright lights. In his appearance on David Letterman’sMy Next Guest Needs No Introduction, Downey stated,
“Initially, everything was really there. They wanted to spend as little as they could on CG replacement, so I remember this helmet went on, and there’d be a shot, and I’d be in this whole suit, and they’d say: ‘Alright, Robert, it’s like you landed on the roof, so when we say action, just go like that, like you just landed, and then start moving forward.”

And so he had to act wearing a real helmet, which was so bright that it provided him very little visibility.

Wearing Iron Man’s Helmet Was A Real Challenge For Robert Downey Jr.
Just as Robert Downey Jr. mentioned, Marvel had very little to spare on CGI, so they kept things as practical as they could, which meant the actor had to don the suit more than a few times. However, the suit in itself presented the actor with a great challenge for the metal helmet and the LED lights were so bright that it made him unable to see.
“So I put this helmet on, and it slammed closed, and I couldn’t see anything, and then these LED lights went on and it was like The Manchurian Candidate… I was absolutely blinded.”
Stated the actor during his talk with David Letterman. Thankfully his efforts paid off for by the last part he didn’t even have to wear any helmets,
“By the time we were doing the last Avengers, they’d just be like, ‘Hey, Robert, would you mind putting on—’ ‘Helmet?! No! Yes, no. Put two dots here, and then you can paint it in later.”
Well, he certainly deserved it for he is widely credited for the success Marvel Studios has achieved now.
TheIron Manfranchise can be streamed on Disney+.
