Sakamoto Days: Lu Shaotang’s 4 Drunken Fist Fighting Modes
Lu Shaotang is the daughter of a triad boss. She has an extraordinary genetic gift. An exceptionally high alcohol tolerance that will surely impair regular folks. But in Lu’s case, it amplifies her fighting abilities. When drunk, she unlocks different drunken fighting modes. Interestingly, each drunken fighting mode reflects a specific emotional state induced by intoxication, making her a truly unpredictable and formidable opponent. Here are Lu Shaotang’s 4 states of drunken fight modes we have seen in Sakamoto Days so far.
How Alcohol Affects Lu Shaotang’s Abilities and Behavior
Lu Shaotang’s transformation into a fighter when she is in a drunken state is not merely physical. It deeply affects her personality, speech, and reactions. She becomes an unpredictable fighter. Her ability to fight in a state typically associated with loss of control (physical and mental) is a fascinating paradox. While ordinary individuals are incapacitated by alcohol, Lu turns into a fighter and assassin. This unique physiological response unlocks different levels of fighting skills known as Drunken Fist. It also creates some funny and amusing moments in the show, depending on her state of drunkenness.
Lu Shaotang’s 4 Drunken Fist Fighting Modes – Explained
Lu Shaotang’s mastery of Drunken Fist has four different modes so far. Different types and amounts of alcohol trigger each drunken fighting mode, and each corresponds to a specific emotional state. She comes from a triad background, so she is bound to be overpowered and knows how to handle herself. But being drunk is where the true action and fun begin.
1. Crying Drunk
The “Crying Drunk” state is characterized as a “melancholic yet precise state”. While the emotional undertone is sadness or melancholy, this state paradoxically unlocks Lu’s heightened precision. This suggests a fighting style that is less about brute force and more about calculated, surgical strikes. She seems unfocused but is subtle in her attacks, especially when defending herself. We are yet to see her use this drunken fighting mode.
2. Angry Drunk
When Lu enters her “Angry Drunk” state, her carefree behavior is replaced by a “rage-fueled fighting mode”. This transformation unleashes her brutal side. Her objective is to overpower her opponent with unadulterated aggression. Her movements become less about finesse and more about raw, destructive power, aiming to inflict severe damage.
Lu, in her ‘angry drunken mode’, is willing to cut off fingers to settle scores. Her speech is sharp, direct, and threatening, reflecting her anger and need for revenge. Her reactions are immediate and violent, driven by a protective instinct for those she cares about – Sakamoto’s family. We see Lu’s Angry Drunk state during her fight withSaw in Episode 12, titled “Overload”. When Saw threatens Shin, Lu’s anger, amplified by pure alcohol, erupts in a display of violence. This fight showcases her ruthless side as she lands a fatal blow on Saw.

Her “Angry Drunk” is described as a “rage-fueled assault mode” in Sakamoto Days.

3. Happy Drunk
The “Happy Drunk” state is a deceptive, carefree fighting style. In this mode, Lu appears happy, often bursting out into laughter. Her fighting style becomes very nimble but also acrobatic. She is unpredictable in her movements, luring opponents into a false sense of security. She might appear to be playing or simply enjoying the fight, hiding her true intentions and attacks.
Her speech becomes playful as she teases her opponents. Her reactions are lighthearted but fluid, allowing her to dodge attacks with ease and counterattack with surprising speed. This state is notably showcased in Episode 4, “Hard Boiled,” during her encounter with Obiguro. When Obiguro knocks her down, Lu “bursts into laughter” because Shin’s high-pitched yell was “hilarious to her”. She effortlessly dodges Obiguro’s kicks and counters with a peculiar move, “landing a hit by sidestepping and kissing Obiguro’s arm”. This demonstrates her ability to use amusement and apparent lack of seriousness as an advantage, confusing her opponent.
Lu manipulates her opponents into underestimating her. However, this apparent vulnerability is a deliberate misdirection, allowing her to be “nimble” and “dodge attacks” before delivering unexpected counters.
4. Triad Drunk
Lu Shaotang’s “Triad Drunk” mode is described as her “deadliest form”. In this drunken state, her personality shifts to an intimidating and ruthless triad assassin. Her fighting style exhibits tremendous speed, strength, and precision. This is where her triad lineage and inherent combat prowess are on full display.
When in Triad Drunk mode, Lu undergoes a visible transformation, too. She lets her hair down and adopts an intimidating presence. She talks little but looks intense. Her reactions are instant and devastating, reflecting her triad-style drunken fighting style. The “Triad Drunk” state is seen against Saw in Episode 12, “Overload”.
After “downing a bottle of 200-proof ethanol,” Lu becomes nothing short of a monster herself. Shin is terrified. She is seen throwing Saw around like a ragdoll, moving faster than his eyes could see her.
Lu Shaotang’s Future in Sakamoto Days
We want to see more of her. We want to see her fight, throw punches, kick stuff, and explore different sides of the emotional drunken states. Hopefully, Lu will continue to play an important role in the Sakamoto Days universe. Are there other states of her drunken fist styles? We will find out soon.
