While DCEU fans are done waiting impatiently to get on board withThe Flash, the Andy Muschietti-directed DC vehicle is far from done with the fans. After years worth of trauma and divisive reactions related to the lead character actor, Ezra Miller, the fans had finally come to accept the fact that there was no other way to move forward other than the film getting a worldwide premiere. The story that had to be brought to light was important for the future of not just Miller’s superhero but the whole of DC and its troubled arcs.
As rumors spread rapidly as to the fate of Flash after the release of the film (considering Gunn’s plans to reboot the entire universe), elsewhere, another superhero becomes entangled in a fate far worse and far more definite than that of Ezra Miller’s in the widely anticipated 2023 movie.

The FlashAwaits the Death of a Significant Superhero
Even beforeThe Flashcan get a headstart on the events of the upcoming DCU or close the events of the former DCEU, whatever remnants exist of the superheroes from SnyderVerse are getting a re-education on the subject of mortality. But while the fear of facing down oblivion due to Flashpoint remains a looming threat haunting the SnyderVerse fans day in and day out, another superhero bites the dust even before the worldwide premiere ofThe Flash.
Sasha Calle, the first Latina actress to don the cape of Supergirl, gets an acclaimed introduction to DC as the Woman of Tomorrow but even though she merely serves in a guest cameo role, it was surprising to learn that the part is not a lasting one. Director Muschietti revealed during an episode on theDeadline’s Crew Callpodcast:
Well, the great thing about Multiverse is that Supergirl lives in a million other timelines, right? So, nobody should– I mean, I don’t wanna spoil it, but whatever happens to Supergirl in this movie should not be taken as the absolute truth.We can see Supergirl, this Supergirl, Sasha Calle, in future projects. We might, because that’s how the Multiverse works. It’s clearly explained by Bruce Wayne. It’s like spaghetti.

Ghosts of the past, present, and future are finding their way into the plot of the movie in the form ofMichael Keaton‘s Batman, Ezra Miller’s Flash, and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl in this narrative that plans to re-examine and reorient every choice that DC had made up until that point in the franchise’s timeline.
What Does Supergirl’s Fatalistic Fate Mean For DC’s Future?
On the one hand,James Gunnhas already made Michael Keaton’sBatman(1989) and Christopher Reeve’sSuperman(1978) canon in the DC Comics universe. Earth-789 now hosts both of these superheroes alongside each other. So, in a universe that hosts Keaton’s Batman, to portray Sasha Calle’s Supergirl going up against General Zod (Michael Shannon) when it has always been Superman to do so is a complication no studio would want to bear. While it is understandable to honor the memory and legacy of Reeve, questions would inevitably arise.
As such, another incidental cameo has also been placed in the film to remove the lingering doubts about Superman – viaNicolas Cage‘s arrival.

While theGhost Rideractor has been involved with a live-action Superman project in the past, it never came to fruition. After voicing the Man of Tomorrow in an animated series, this will be Cage’s first take on the Kryptonian on the big screen. Meanwhile, with the Flashpoint timeline already planning to erase whatever remains of the past DC universes so as to move forward with James Gunn’s DCU Bible without dead weights holding it back, it can be inferred that Supergirl’s (potential) death is a sacrifice for the greater good and in order for Ezra Miller’s Flash to finish resetting the timeline.
According to Andy Muschietti, Calle’s superhero will still exist as Supergirl in another reality and will have the potential to return in future DC projects, includingSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.And Calle herself has teased that her character’s minor introduction inThe Flashsimply serves as the“runway to a bigger story.”
