Zendaya answered that the character of Rue was a combination of various experiences of different people. So she tried to humanize her as much as possible. The actress said:

Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man saves Zendaya’s MJ in No Way Home

“It’s hard to say that there’s any specific process for that… Rue has become an amalgamation of my experiences, his (Sam Levinson’s) experiences and our collective pain — and seeing through the eyes of an addict. I think the approach was to try it as human as possible without ever shying away from the devastation and the ugliness of what that can create.”

Since both of them had starred together inSpider-Man: No Way Home, the conversation obviously shifted toward that as well. Garfield revealed that he had a blast shooting with her and also clarified what that iconic catch scene meant to him.
