He has starred in some of the most universally acclaimed and high-earning movies. But hisAlice in Wonderlandfailed to live up to the standards of his past collaborations with Tim Burton.
The 2010 Tim Burton film was the live-action adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s novel of the same name which had also been adapted before in animation by Disney. The movie starred Mia Wasikowska, Depp, Anne Hathaway, and Helena Bonham Carter, and started the popular trend of Disney’s live-action adaptations.
The movie doesn’t have many admirers and received highly mixed reviews for its messy screenplay and direction. Despite not being Tim Burton’s worst, the movie was not close to other classics from the director. According toMovie Web, Johnny Depp, who played the role of Mad Hatter in the film gave his best and even researched on Hatters to portray the role in the CGI-heavy world.
The CGI world failed to charm the critics and they also deemed it to be lacking a soul. Many critics also complained that theEdward Scissorhandsdirector didn’t care much about the story. A certain section of viewers also criticized the visuals of the movie. But even after so much criticism, the makers were brave to go for a sequel.

Following the follow-up to Lewis Carroll’sAlice in Wonderland, the movie also spawned a sequel which was released in 2016. The confidence from the first movie’s success that motivated the makers turned out to be a bad decision as it failed this time.Alice Through the Looking Glassnot only ended with abysmal reviews but also a disastrous box office run.
This time, the movie was helmed by James Robin while Tim Burton was attached to it as the producer. Similar to the first film, the critics hated the project but this time it failed to attract audiences as well. The critics bashed the movie saying it had nothing to do with Lewis Carroll’s story and even complained about it being offensive and loud.
