With a box office collection of $154.4 million against a budget of $200 million,Killers of the Flower Moonwould be considered a flop by many. However, the way Apple scheduled its theatrical release and streaming release, it was given from the get-go that the Lily Gladstone starrer’s success shouldn’t be measured solely based on ticket sales.

As far as critical success is concerned, Martin Scorsese’s film has received glowing reviews that are usually attached to Oscar-winning movies. The engrossing 3-hour 26-minute watch not only demanded a lot from its actors – who all delivered intense performances – but also from its audience, leaving them with plenty of questions about the bloodied past that shaped the present of Oklahoma. Essentially,Killers of the Flower Moondid what many teachers failed to do.

Lily Gladstone Talks About the Plight of Killers of the Flower Moon Story in Oklahoma
In the 1920s Oklahoma, the Osage Indian Nation became one of the richest people per capita in the world after oil was discovered beneath their land. This was followed by a greed-fueled saga that saw the systematic murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation.
Martin Scorsesejoined hands with his trusted actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro to bring this grim tale to the fore. It’s been nearly a century since the horrific reign in Oklahoma took place and it’s the first time many individuals have come across the suffering of the native community.

Lily Gladstone, who portrayed Mollie Burkhart, one of the natives, sat down with Kelly Reichardt forInterview Magazineto talk about the theme and impact of their movie. As Reichardt mentioned the Tulsa race massacre, Gladstone added:
“Everything that these Oklahomans are doing is—to say that the objection to teaching about the Tulsa massacre at Greenwood wasn’t race-driven is just—every teacher in the state’s too afraid to teach Killers of the Flower Moon.”

The Tulsa race massacre, which was also mentioned inKillers of the Flower Moon, saw white people destroy a black community in the Oklahoma neighborhood of Greenwood in 1921. Both incidents remained out of schools for decades and only caught significant public attention through the television showWatchmen (2019)and now Gladstone’s movie.

How Lily Gladstone’s Grandmother Reacted to Learning They Are Working With Leonardo Dicaprio
Gladstone, who grew up on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, is very crucial to Scorsese’s story, as it revolves around their character Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman of considerable wealth, and her attempts to save her community from a spree of murders with the help of her husband, Ernest Burkhart, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.
They (Gladstone uses she/they pronouns) are of indigenous background and were accordingly asked by Reichardt in the interview how their grandmother reacted to the news of their involvement in the Di Caprio starrer. She replied:
“She did. She had dementia so it was nice to surprise her with the news, over, and over, and over again. It was the first time in my whole acting journey that she’s heard of anybody that I was working with.”
Their grandmother knew who Scorsese and De Niro were, but screwed her face up when Gladstone mentioned DiCaprio, as she had no idea about the superstar.
