The Ayer cut has been long overdue. Despite the fact that David Ayer’sSuicide Squad(2016) brought in huge numbers at the box office, the film remains one of the worst-rated films of the DC Universe with a 26% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Since then, David Ayer has said loud and clear that his version of the story unravels much better than the final cut.

Recently, David Ayer shared an epic-looking concept art of Jared Leto’s Joker fromSuicide Squadstating that this was the original intent for the character. Clearly, the Joker in the concept art looked much better and more menacing than the one in the final cut. After being called out by a fan for making things up, David Ayer clapped back at him telling him to take a chill pill.

On August 11,David Ayerposted a concept art ofJared Leto’s Joker where he was seen rocking the iconic purple leather jacket. However, this Joker was missing the ‘Damaged’ tattoo from his forehead, something which Ayer regrets adding in the film. He once stated,“It’s the one aesthetic choice I wish I hadn’t made. Caught a lot of smoke for it, obviously.”

The concept art also sees Joker surrounded by thick, vibrant purple smoke as well as hundreds of skulls around him.

Needless to say, fans were quite impressed with the photo. Unfortunately, one user decided to troll Ayer stating that it wasn’t the“original intent”and the filmmaker was just trying to cover up the mess he made.

Ayer is quite active on social media where he engages with his fans constantly. Upon seeing the hate comment, theFurydirected clapped back saying it wasn’t that serious, and explained the meaning behind the concept art.
It’s just concept art. It ain’t that deep. The idea was Enchantress was altering the reality around her and changing the environment. The Joker image is a simple take on that concept.

Clearly, Ayer had a lot planned forSuicide Squad.Unfortunately, things didn’t quite work out how he hoped they will. On the bright side, the Ayer cut is hiding somewhere back there waiting forJames Gunn’s green signal. Whenever it does release, fans will finally be able to see what Ayer had actually wanted for the film.

David Ayer is Confident in the Ayer Cut
Recently, a fan tried to troll Ayer on X, previously known as Twitter, by asking whether the filmmaker remembers the film released in 2016 or not. The user implied that no one really cares about the film or the Ayer cut anymore as it has been seven years sinceSuicide Squadcame out.
Ayer, who is not one to take a hit silently, wrote back stating that he knows his version of the film is much better than the final cut.
“All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being show seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have it’s time to be shared.”
Check out Ayer’s long tweet:
What’s your advice on how to navigate this situation with grace? There’s a genuine curiosity and interest from a lot of people. And I’m aware of there is another group of people that have fun mocking the film. Your comment is a perfect example of how many are magnetically drawn…https://t.co/QZTZGUInAS

Another user claimed the Ayer cut will never happen as“anything that wasn’t included in the theatrical version is an afterthought.”To this, the filmmaker stated,
“Normally, you’re absolutely right. This is an extraordinary case of a movie being utterly re-engineered in port. It’s not a couple cut scenes being added.”
You might be wondering what is so different about the Ayer cut and how it compares toSuicide Squad.Well, for starters, Joker had a more significant role in the film and his dynamic withMargot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was more comic accurate, more toxic, than what was shown.
While the Internet is divided on the Ayer cut, it will certainly be interesting to see what the filmmaker has been singing praises about for all these years.
Suicide Squad(2016) is available to stream on Max.
