The Olympia contest started in 1965 and became more prestigious than the AAU’s Mr. America contest, mainly due to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s influence. In the contest, which is promoted by the Weiders, Schwarzenegger, aka “Austrian Oak,” won 14 world titles, including seven Mr. Olympia titles.

Nowadays, Schwarzenegger is known all over the globe for his many accomplishments. He’s not only the world champion bodybuilder but also a Hollywood action hero, successful businessman, environmentalist, philanthropist, best-selling author, and California’s 38th Governor.
There was a time when Schwarzenegger trained each body part 3X a week and made tremendous gains in his heyday. Over time, he has shared his top tips for burning fat while building muscle, and you’ll be relieved to hear that it doesn’t involve counting calories.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Doesn’t Believe in Counting Calories Like Other Bodybuilders
Bodybuilders, especially Instagram influencers, often work out and burn many more calories than the average person. They also calculate calorie intake precisely and cycle between phases of eating more and eating less. While bodybuilders need to count calories to maintain their weight and fitness goals, it’s not a gold mine forArnold Schwarzenegger. He never counted calories in his career as an actor and bodybuilder. Instead, he said his weight-loss strategy was swapping meals for protein or veggie soup.
Schwarzenegger understands the significance of calories, yet he suggests focusing on portion control and listening to one’s body instead of strict calorie counting. However, he adjusted his eating habits to lose weight when needed. He says:

“I was never a fanatic about diet. I have always done it by feel.”
The Austrian Oak says he’s allergic to overthinking and that’s why he resists calory count:

‘I understand if you want or need to count calories to figure out how to dial up or down, but I am allergic to overthinking. It takes a lot of energy to think. I choose what I use my energy on, and for me, it’s never been tracking calories.”
Arnold used to eat a lot during his career, over 3,000 calories every day. He mostly follows a plant-based diet now but had lots of protein back then. His routine was five to six small meals daily, with 30-50 grams of protein each, every three hours.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Put Vegan Twist to Strengthen His Diet
“I have been about 80% plant-based for the past 5 years of my life. Even though I still eat meat sometimes.”
Schwarzenegger emphasized that his diet choice isn’t just about health; it’s also about the environment. He pointed out pollution as a big issue (and how it affects the planet), especially in the US. The Austrian Oak argued that eating less meat could help preserve forests and provide more animal food.
