British model and actor Jameela Jamil has been a pioneer in more ways than one. The star who started as a radio jockey, worked her way up the ladder amidst stif competition to become the first female solo presenter on the BBC Radio 1 chart show. With a career in modelling side by side, Jamil moved to the USA in 2016 to pursue a profession in acting. While she is also an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, Jamil is now requesting more prominence for women in the field of cinema in the wake of many artists coming out as non-binary.

Jameela Jamil Calls For A Non-Binary Category at Awards

British actor and modelJameela Jamilhas always been vocal about her opinions on any subject. She is an avid advocate for women’s rights as well as for the LGBTQ+ community. The actor though, speculated on the nature of the awards and the opportunities for women with many people now openly coming out as non-binary. Speaking of the chances that women will get or lose because of this, Jamil said in an Instagram post,

“Would it not be better to give non-binary people their own category rather than open the door for Hollywood to completely shut out women given the known disproportionate amount of men vs women winning at award shows? I say this as an audience member because I am not going to be nominated for an Oscar anyway. I have no horse in this race.”

To prevent any controversy arising from her statement, Jamil went on to clarify that she had every community’s best interests at heart and wanted to see everyone get their due for who they are authentically with no ulterior motive attached. This move she felt, would open more doors for many people.

Jameela Jamil Defended Will Smith During Slapgate

It is well known that former radio presenter turned actor Jameela Jamil is a powerful supporter of women’s rights. The star who has vocally expressed her desire to change the system for women, once again stood up for another woman’s cause. Jamil openly supportedWill Smithduring his infamous slapgate scandal involving Chris Rock and praised him for defending his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. To quote Jamil,

“Will Smith said, “Not Today”. A man big enough to absolutely floor him, slapped him softly enough that Chris barely moved, because he made fun of his wife’s alopecia on a world stage. Don’t say #protectBlackwomen for two years and then only condemn Will here”.
