Steven Spielberg is the epitome of a real storyteller. A legendary visionary whose nearly every single movie is a blockbuster on the big screens, the 76-year-old director is counted among the world’s most recognizable and influential filmmakers of all time. But while his movies are widely commended on screen, few people know about the tragedies and nightmarish situations faced by the director as well as the cast behind the scenes.

While the movie’s success was undeniably smooth sailing, its shooting, on the other hand, wasn’t. Despite its groundbreaking special effects and unique storyline,Jawswouldn’t have made it to the big screens had its cast not been saved from near drowning. Sharing the disastrous situations faced while filming the movie in the middle of the ocean, directorSteven Spielbergsaid,

The mechanically engineered shark for Jaws (1975)

“A problem we had was when a speedboat pulling the Orca went too fast and pulled out the planking from the haul—water rushed in, and the boat sank in about two minutes. I remember vividly the moment where the actors were yelling, ‘Send boats, get us out, send boats!’ Our sound mixer John Carter—who shared an Oscar with his team for Jaws—picked up the Nagra recorder, held it over his head, and said, ‘F–k the actors, save the sound department!’ I have this image to this day of John sinking holding his recorder with water up to his ankles, and then to his knees, while crews on boats were scrambling to pull everybody off the sinking Orca. Months later, he was holding an Oscar in those hands!”

But despite being stuck in such a dangerous position, with his entire cast and crew close to being massacred in the wide ocean, the then-26-year-old Spielberg kept his calm and managed to save everyone and everything from his second feature film.

The Other Behind-The-Scenes Tragedy On The Sets Of Steven Spielberg’sJaw

If you thought that the entireJawcrew nearly sinking to death was the only tragedy that occurred on the sets, you were most definitely wrong. Besides the crew, the shark in the movie too kept on constantly sinking, thanks to the ocean’s saltwater.

According to sources, the moving shark that was designed by the special effects designers couldn’t stay out in the ocean for too long while filming, as the saltwater kept on constantly eating away at the mechanics of the shark. Thus, the shark wasn’t able to be filmed for the intended time limit by the director, only appearing in the movie for a fraction of the time limit intended instead.

But this too ended up positively for the movie as the minimal appearance of the shark increased the audience’s anticipation and attention toward the movie. Nonetheless, Steven Spielberg’s, along with all the cast and crew’s hard work and dedication to filming the movie paid off, judging from the numerous Oscars that the $476M movie bagged.
