Has Baldur’s Gate 3 set the bar for other RPGs?

The Twitter thread in question was confirmed to be from developer Xalavier Nelson Jr. who had posted up the following;

“Like a lot of people, I’m deeply excited about what the lovely folks at Larian accomplished with Baldur’s Gate 3, but I want to gently, pre-emptively push back against players taking that excitement and using it to apply criticism or a “raised standard” to RPGs going forward.”

And he went further by arguing that Larian Studios have taken a massive risk with the game and that the processes used to create it, can not be copied by even the bigger companies in the industry. Furthermore, he expressed his concerns that players may expect other studios to follow their lead, regardless of feasibility.

He also offered up a cautionary statement which saw many developers from companies such as Obsidian, Blizzard and Insomniac Games in agreement;

Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke was said to be confused with this recent debate and that it was his view that in the gaming industry ‘standards die every day’. Vincke went on to state that when he first started out in the industry, it wasAssassin’s Creedwhich proved to be the benchmark at that time and that this would be seen as the future of RPGs.

And because of the massive budget, it meant that other companies would have to consolidate. But this never materialised because there is still so much creative space which can be used in this industry. And regarding RPGs, he noted that it doesn’t take a a game like Baldur’s Gate 3 to see the genre changing.

“There’s always been innovation, but at the same time, it doesn’t require massive technological evolution to do something crazy, and cool, and different than what anybody else has done before.”
